Why Count Your AI Tokens?

In the world of Large Language Models (LLMs), you aren't billed per word—you are billed per token. A token is a piece of a word. When interacting with APIs like OpenAI's GPT-4o, Anthropic's Claude 3.5, or Google's Gemini, understanding your token payload is critical for estimating operational costs.

100% Client-Side Privacy

Unlike many AI tools, our Token Calculator is built with absolute privacy in mind. We utilize a WebAssembly (WASM) compilation of the tiktoken library. This means your proprietary code, sensitive documents, and system prompts are tokenized directly on your CPU. No data is ever sent to a server.

How Pricing is Calculated

We calculate costs against the modern LLM standard of Price per 1 Million (1M) Tokens. The tool splits the estimate into two groups:

  • Input Cost: The cost you pay to feed your prompt/context into the model.
  • Output Cost: The estimated cost if the model were to generate this exact volume of text back to you (Output tokens are generally 3x-4x more expensive).

Pro Tip for Prompt Engineering

White space counts! Removing unnecessary line breaks, double spaces, and tabs from your JSON/Code payloads before sending them to an LLM API can save you thousands of tokens over time.
